Completely refurbished and under new management since the beginning of 2013, The Retreat is a stylish design African lodge which mixes all five elements while respecting the principles of Feng Shui in its style, but is at heart a truly African sanctuary.
One can explore and experience nature and authentic wildlife at one’s own pace and wish, tailor made with one’s own guide on foot, by boat, or on the road, while combining those activities with great gastronomic experiences and holistic treatments in our outdoor spa. For the more adventurous, one can even experience a night of fly camping and spend time in our ‘nest’ up a tree! Various themes like Adventure, Awareness, Romance, Family delight open doors to a bespoke experience of Africa in Selous, an area twice the size of Switzerland and under the patronage of UNESCO.
As avid explorers, the owners of The Retreat have a passion for the preservation of wilderness and wildlife, fragile communities and the environment as a whole, which made them create a unique lodge based on thoughtful care and respect towards nature, and this in a striking location on the shores of the mighty Ruaha River.
Our guests are invited to feel the peace and space, experience the adventure, and learn about untouched ecosystems while helping to support rural communities. And for those wishing to combine a safari with a beach ‘escapade’, there are daily regular direct flights between Selous and the island of Zanzibar.
